On a foggy November day a friend of mine and I visited the shipyard of the shipping company of lake Lucerne (www.lakelucerne.ch), which is only a block away from the station. The shipping company is probably one of the most innovative in the area and has a fleet of 5 paddle steamers and 15 motor vessels, whereof 2 are brand new, like the MS Saphire.
The shipyard is right next to the beautiful "inseli", a peninsula which namely in summer is one of the favorite places for locals with its 2 new Bars. Below you can see the green building, where the shipbuilding is situated. The tracks are still used to transport gravel and maybe even parts for the newest modern vessel which is due 2015.
The MS Rütli below is probably the smallest vessel of all. It's been built in 1929 and bought in 2014 by Mr. Samih Sawiris, an Egyptian entrepreneur (www.thechedi-andermatt.com) who has probably saved it from the junk press.
The MS Saphire below is one of the two modern vessels (the other one is the MS Cirrus) and a wonderful way to get to know the beauties of Lake Lucerne.
Situated near the station and the university of Lucerne the shipyard is a great destination for a short break from all the shopping and other sightseeing in and around Lucerne.
